Justin gave me a buncha Kane comics by Paul Grist. I recommend! The man can cartoon for serious.
Some may notice the header change on Carl. I'm attempting to make things a bit more unified amongst all my sites, Justin's sites, and the Cliff-Face sites. 2009 is the year of more web unity! Needless to say I have more work to do. I'm looking at a revamped approach to putting Tear-Stained Makeup online. Third times the charm I guess.
Oh, I made a bit of a change on the SHOUTOUTS!! page. Color shoutouts now available! I'll pimp this more at some point I'm sure. Take advantage now before I decide it's a terrible idea!

Ha. Sometimes I'm not even sure if Carl is joking. I think he is in that last panel, but you know, that guy is terrible at comedy!
So we are nearly half way through the month and I am thrilled. I've changed my procedures and its made me very productive! When I started CLS I had the first fifty or so pages laid out almost exactly as they are here, the rest outlined. After I drew those I started making very loose layouts about 6 or seven pages in advance which devolved into almost no layouts. This is what I've been doing lately and it has been crazy stress. Everytime I finish a page I'm in the wilderness and end up doing a lot of staring. So this month I started working on eight pages simultaneously, no layouts, as a modest goal for the month ( I usually can do ten to twelve if I'm doing nothing else which is rare, but this year I plan on being Carl focused). Anyway its almost halfway through the month and I'll be done in about two days!
Remarkable. It's kind of a combination of my old way of working and how I've been doing things more recently.
I used to draw everything, then ink everything, then letter everything, up until I laid out the beginning of CLS. It was then I decided I wanted to do one page at a time, to avoid going months without inking, and I figured my pages would benefit from lettering first. So it became, light drawing, lettering, finished drawing, inking, then the next page. This was ok as long as I had detailed layouts. Problem is my layouts have been devolving lately. Truth is I kinda hate doing them. So now I'm trying to draw everything like the old way, but only for a chunk of pages. It's a small enough set that I can bounce around from page to page, doing whatever I feel without hitting any snags. A little inking here, a little lettering here, it's the new style! This makes for a lot less staring at the page. If there's something I can't figure out I move on. Less frustration, less procrastinating, less fear.
On another note I've been taking a buddy's advice and doing my best to free myself of any goal other then finishing the book. I haven't been all that interested in promoting it or even doing long posts like this. But I want to thank everyone who does come here, I plan on putting some secret contests up soon for the faithful! Ya'll are crazy. If I get ahead of myself the schedule may increase at some point. We will see!

Happy New Year, earlies! Today I got my license renewed. I probably should of gone with a new picture but I've never before been given the option (I think I'm getting senior benefits) so me with the fro-mullet and Mankind shirt will stay with me for four more years. The really annoying thing was walking uptown to the DMV carrying this sail of a book, Kramer's Ergot 7. I had to bring it back to manhattan today so I could return it. My copy has a misprint! Aside from that it looks interesting. I haven't actually read any of it. I just enjoy carrying it every where I go!
Ok, that's the end of 08' for Carl's Large Story. IT WILL FINISH IN 2009!!! But don't quote me on that! Now back to Guitar Hero! It gives me worse hand pain then the real thing. Obviously not designed for humans! But a fun, addictive, Christmas gift anyway.

I knew she was due to go anytime, so for the last couple years I've backed up everything regularly. Her soul will live on though her body returns to the dirt and minerals from whence she came. Heyo. SPX 2008 was a soul-saving blast. I have to say it's been an odd year of cons for me. NYCC tested my limits for reals, and I felt like a fish out of water. MoCCA one he other hand was "my people", and hotly anticipated. Unfortunately it was also balls-hot and had me in a low mood for most of it. Despite record sales, I wasn't that interested in looking at people's work, trading and BUYING. ENTER SPX! I was way not in the mood for it actually, but figured I'd come around, and I had much fun. I have a load of goodies to go through, and spent more than I sold. Gotta get that economy rolling! The new Saturday schedule gets thumbs up. It certainly felt like there was more people than ever before. I didn't really do much in the way of after-parties, but I found my way to the Ignatz which was buzzing. It was cool. A great advertisement for the nominees. Many of whom I went and purchased their books the next day. Nothing like big slide projections of comic covers and seeing some of the winners faces to help navigate myself to the tables for winning purchase! PURCHASE! The floor was awesome. I met many new people. I'm excited to finish my books and have some COLLECTIONS for 09!

So, I've been thinking about how I have numerous projects in various forms of near finished-ness. And how if I keep going this way I may have 3-5 booksize books done, possibly all at once. So. I think I need to work out some sort of organization for myself. Maybe I should pretend I'm a real publisher and I'm also 3 different artists. How would I stagger my releases! How would I organize this mammoth exercise! I'm still missing plenty of material, so that should be the priority for the rest of this year. Tear-Stained Makeup Book 1 of 3 is the closest to completion. I just have to finish some re-dos (that shouldv'e been done already). Hell, Tear-Stained Book 2 is already half done. Carl's Large Story is over the halfway mark. I'd like to re-do the old carl collection in a better format. Then there's secret project which should tip in over a hundred pages by the end of the year. That's serious backburner though because I haven't done enough to decide if it will ever see light of day.
Man, the whole idea of one thing a time, does not resonate with me at all.

I was cleaning out some of my shelves last night when I discovered this awesome picture of Andrew Jackson swinging bolos (I forgot to scan it), that I drew a couple years back. I had completely forgotten that, originally Tear-Stained Makeup was going to be a series of progressively weirder stories (now I'll be lucky if I get one done.) I believe the idea was to have Tildy and Wilson teams up with the bolo-throwing ghost of Andrew Jackson to enact some sort of vengeance on history.
Man, I used to have good ideas!

Since finishing TSM #7, I've been struggling with schedules and working and figuring out the best method for finishing CLS. My logic, simply, was that CLS was closer to being done than anything else so i should focus and finish it. My conclusion reached after much soul searching is that the old ways are the best ways. So Tear-Stained #8, (and a secret OTHER project), may come to light before CLS is done. This is because I lack the capacity to work on one thing. Ironically if I only work on one thing, I will never get it done. I read somewhere that Kim Deitch has a lot of books in the works at once. So I'll take after one of my heroes and just be MARCOS CRAZY BOOKS. Swear to god one year I will put out nine hardcovers. That's cool though, the juices thrive best when they are juiced with a variety of my brain fruit at once. It's like a V-8.

Hi all, hope you had a good holiday weekend! Mine was solid. A couple of days in hot, humid South Jersey. It was righteous, cept for getting bite in the ass by a great dane while riding a bike! Don't worry, no skin was broken. Then I ate ribs.
Last night I watched Nick Fury: Agent of Shield. It wasn't sa bad as I expected. I mean it was crap, but so many comic book movies are anyway. And it did have Arnim Zola in it! Now, I don't now much about Zola cept Kirby made him and Justin likes drawing him celebrating Independence day and dancing. But I appreciated the Zola fanservice.
